Spring awakening for body and mind – time for cleansing and a fresh start
When nature reawakens outside and the days become brighter, our bodies too signal a desire for renewal. Especially after the cold winter months, the body often stores metabolic residues (ama), which can lead to heaviness, tiredness and susceptibility to infections. Ayurveda offers us proven ways to gently but effectively relieve this – for more energy, clarity and inner freshness.

Why spring is the ideal time for relief
In cold temperatures, the organism tries to adapt to the external conditions by upregulating the digestive fire (Agni). The aim is to increase heat production and metabolic activity, which is why we often feel a craving for hearty, substantial food in winter. Physiologically, this makes sense, as the fuelled Agni needs nutritious, warming food to prevent it from attacking the body’s own tissues (Dhatus). However, if food is eaten too heavily, too late or in an unfavourable combination, this exceeds the capacity of Agni and metabolic residues – Ama – are produced. If Agni becomes unbalanced as a result, the first symptoms are a feeling of fullness, heaviness and an increased susceptibility to infection, which many people recognise as spring flu and so-called spring fatigue.

An increase in Ama (metabolic residues) is particularly encouraged by the following habits:
- Frequent snacks that overload the digestive system
- Too many sweets, pastries and heavy foods
- Excessive consumption of animal products
- Overconsumption of white flour or dairy products (e.g. cheese, yoghurt)
- Late and heavy dinners
- Food or drinks straight from the fridge
- Lack of physical activity
If these factors persist over a long period of time, ama accumulates in the body and blocks the fine tissue channels (Srotas), which can lead to chronic health issues.

Signs that indicate excessive ama (metabolic residues)
Ama develops on a physical and mental level and is initially unproblematic as long as build-up and breakdown are in balance. However, if ama build-up gets out of hand, the following symptoms can occur:
- Tiredness and sluggishness
- Poorer quality of sleep
- Head pressure and mental fog
- Accumulation of mucus in the airways
- Joint pain and morning stiffness
- Feeling of fullness and nausea
- Sluggish digestion
- Water retention in the face or legs
- Thick tongue coating or imprints on the sides of the tongue
If you recognise yourself here, now is the perfect time to specifically relieve your body and reduce Ama.

Exercise as gentle relief
Even regular, moderate exercise helps to reduce excess Kapha and mobilise Ama. At least 30 minutes of exercise in the fresh air every day is ideal – brisk walking where you can breathe through your nose in a relaxed manner. In Ayurveda, it is recommended to exercise at no more than 50% of your maximum capacity to avoid increasing Vata and to optimally support detoxification. Listen to your body: feel which form of movement is good for you and gives you lightness.

Further measures for gentle detoxification
Drink hot ginger water: simmer 4-5 slices of fresh ginger for 15-20 minutes, pour into a thermos flask and drink warm throughout the day.
Reduce animal proteins: Temporarily avoid dairy products, quark and cheese in particular.
Favour light, warm meals: steamed vegetables, cereals such as quinoa or buckwheat. Enrich meals with hotter and ama-reducing spices: turmeric, ginger, black pepper, pippali.
Incorporate de-stress days: A weekly fluid day helps to continuously eliminate ama.

Relief day – fluid day in Ayurveda
Ayurveda recommends a weekly detox day, especially for individuals with Pitta or Kapha dominance. On this day, you only consume light liquids:
- Fresh vegetable, rice or cereal soups
- Herbal teas
- Freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices
Important: Drink hot water regularly in small sips between meals, avoid dairy products and pay attention to your well-being. In this way, Ama and excess Kapha can be gently and continuously reduced.

Instructions: The 10-day Ama detox cure – gentle and effective detoxification at home

In contrast to classic therapeutic fasting, which involves completely abstaining from food, the Ayurveda detox cure focuses on a targeted reduction of harmful food in order to stabilise Agni and gently eliminate Ama.You should only undertake this program on your own if you are healthy and feel stable. If in doubt, please call us on 02603 9407-0 for advice.
The following points should be noted when carrying out the programme:
- The cure should be carried out for at least 7-10 days.
- During this time, avoid fried foods, roasted foods, alcohol, coffee, sweets and all animal products.
- Lemon and honey water: Half an hour before breakfast, mix the juice of half a lemon and a spoonful of organic honey in water at a maximum temperature of 40 °C and drink.
- Breakfast: If hungry, drink freshly squeezed fruit or vegetable juices.
- Lunch: Light, freshly cooked vegetable dishes, preferably with dal as a source of vegetable protein. Eat your fill, but eat mindfully.
- Dinner: Thin cereal, rice or vegetable soups, ideally before 6pm.
- Snacks between meals: Freshly squeezed juices only if needed, if you are very hungry or tired, otherwise allow a healthy feeling of hunger.
- Hot water: drink 10 minutes of boiled water in small sips throughout the day (except around meals).
In addition, daily exercise is recommended: at least 30 minutes in the fresh air, without overexertion. Going to bed before 10 pm and getting enough rest are further success factors.
Through this gentle cleansing, metabolic residues are broken down, the digestive fire is strengthened and the body returns to its natural balance. After the cure, it is crucial to slowly rebuild the diet in order to keep Agni stable and avoid relapses.
Scientific studies confirm the effectiveness
Recent studies underscore the profound effects of Ayurvedic detoxification:
A pilot study (Luhaste et al., 2025) investigated an innovative online Ayurveda detox programme over four months. The results are remarkable: participants reported a 55% reduction in anxiety, depressive symptoms were reduced by 45% and physical complaints decreased by 42%. Energy levels increased significantly and the body mass index also fell by an average of 2%. The high participation rate of 91% shows: Ayurvedic cleansing programmes are not only effective, but also very easy to implement in everyday life.
Another randomized controlled study (Shetty et al., 2024) with 100 patients who underwent an Ayurveda and yoga-based programme showed a significant reduction in inflammatory biomarkers such as CRP and IL-6. At the same time, the psychological quality of life improved significantly: mental strength, sleep quality and pain perception showed marked improvements. These results prove that a conscious detox phase not only strengthens physical health, but also balances the mind and emotions.
