Rheumatic diseases
When the joints ache

“All my joints hurt.” “My knees are swollen.” “My ankles ache and they feel hot.”

This or a similar experience is what rheumatism patients report with regard to their agonizing complaints.

One or more joints are swollen and warm, and there is radiating, shooting or stretching pain. These are clear signs of inflamed joints. In case of rheumatism, mostly metacarpophalangeal or interphalangeal joints are affected, but the larger joints of arms and legs are also often chronically inflamed. It is also typical to see the pain move from one joint to another, and several joints can be affected at the same time.

Rheumatism often causes restrictions to movement. Prolonged rheumatism very often results in deformation of the affected joints.

What is the Vedic medicine point of view on rheumatism?

Rheumatic diseases from an Ayurvedic point of view

According to the Maharishi Ayurveda approach, rheumatism starts with the loss of natural balance.

Metabolic residues develop continuously due to improper lifestyle. In the case of rheumatism, toxins (in Ayurveda called “Ama”) accumulate in the articular cartilage. Due to the subsequent acute inflammatory response, the body tries to loosen and release the joint-aggravating substances, but often in vain.

In Ayurveda every patient is different and so each person’s rheumatism complaint varies. The Ayurvedic approach at our Centre is holistic.

What can Ayurveda do for you?

In Vedic medicine, rheumatic diseases are addressed by combining various treatments into a multi-faceted approach adapted to your individual situation, as determined in a comprehensive diagnosis by one of our physicians.

An integrated approach

Increasingly, patients are finding that conventional therapies alone are not enough.

They recognize that healing must take place on all levels. In the case of rheumatism, for example, an emphasis on elimination of toxins as well as strengthening of the individual’s digestive power can be recommended to limit the building up of new toxins. It is important to bring all natural regulatory principles back into harmony. Nutritional recommendations and helpful exercises, as well as specific herbal mixtures tailored according to your needs, support a health-conscious lifestyle. In this way, your natural self-healing abilities can lessen inflammation in your joints effectively.
