Morbus Bechterew
When the spine gets crooked

“My back is getting stiffer and stiffer”, “I have dull aches in my lumbar spine”, “I keep walking bent forward.”.

This or something similar is how patients with Bechterew’s disease experience their limiting illness.

It begins with a dull ache in the lumbar and gluteal region, associated with morning stiffness. This eases with movement and recurs after periods of rest. Within a few months, the pain becomes persistent.

Bechterew’s disease is a genetic disorder, characterized by a malfunction of the body’s immune system. This attacks the tendon insertions, particularly in the pelvis and spine.
The resulting inflammation causes swelling and damage to the bone marrow, which ossifies over time.

How does Vedic medicine view Bechterew’s disease?

Morbus Bechterew from an Ayurvedic point of view

According to the Maharishi Ayurveda approach, morbus bechterew starts with the loss of natural balance.

Metabolic residues and toxins, called “ama” in Ayurveda, are constantly produced – due to our way of life – which in the case of Bechterew’s disease accumulate in the body and upset the immune system. Through the inflammatory reaction, the body tries to dissolve these substances – which irritate the joints – and break them down.

But according to Ayurveda, no two patients are alike, and so every Bekhterew’s disease is different. The Ayurvedic approach in our clinic is based on holism.

What can Ayurveda do for you?

In Vedic medicine, morbus bechterew is addressed by combining various treatments into a multi-faceted approach adapted to your individual situation, as determined in a comprehensive diagnosis by one of our physicians.

An integrated approach

Increasingly, patients are finding that conventional therapies alone are not enough.

They recognize that the path to recovery must take place at all levels. In Bechterew’s disease, for example, the focus can be on eliminating toxins or strengthening the individual’s digestive power so that new toxins are not constantly produced. It is important to bring the natural regulatory principles back into a necessary balance. Dietary recommendations, helpful exercises as well as special herbal mixtures – all put together especially for you – help you to lead a more conscious lifestyle. So that your natural self-healing powers can effectively mitigate the inflammation in the spine.
